If you are in Singapore dreaming about going to Japan or living in Japan in need of a tropical paradise, don’t hold back, the Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO) and the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) just signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC).
The year 2016 celebrates the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Singapore (SJ50). The MOC signed on Monday, 18th January 2016 by Mr Lionel Yeo, Chief Executive of STB and Mr Ryoichi Matsuyama, President of JNTO, is a first for the two organisations and will create greater tourism traffic for both countries.
The ceremony held at Japan Creative Centre – Embassy of Japan in Singapore (JCC), was witnessed by the His Excellency Takeuchi Haruhisa, Ambassador of Japan to Singapore and Mr Peter Tan, Deputy Secretary, SEA & ASEAN and Deputy Secretary International, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). |
“Today, we enjoy excellent bilateral relationship not only in diplomatic area, but also in people to people exchange and robust tourism is the integral part of that exchange. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to STB, JNTO, Japanese local authorities and tourism industries for their contribution. I believe that this MOC, signed in the beginning of SJ50, will contribute to promote the tourism between the two countries futher.” – His Excellency Haruhisa Takeuchi, Ambassador of Japan to Singapore.
During the event, both organisations launched their new tourism logo featuring mascots Hello Kitty (Japan) and Doritan (Singapore). Distinguished guests were served the exclusive shōchū liquor from Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan as well as Sakura Sling, a concocted by Raffles Hotel, Singapore. The new partnership would certainly kick-start a deeper mutual cooperation between Japan and Singapore and we can’t wait to see what will soon be in stored for all of us! |

The tourism logo that was unveiled at the ceremony – To commemorate SJ50, a joint logo is created for Tourism: Japanese mascot, Hello Kitty and Singapore mascot, Dori-tan. This logo symbolises the collaborations between JNTO and STB and exhibits the bilateral tourism between Japan and Singapore.
The Hello Kitty mascot symbolises the character of “Cool Japan” while Dori-tan represents a five-year-old Singaporean boy who used to live with his family in Japan.
Dori-tan is inspired by Singapore’s iconic Merlion and the King of Fruits, the Durian |
