JCC was proud to host its first event of 2024 on 10th January with a lecture by Professor Takaaki Kajita, winner of the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physics. His lecture was a review on his past and ongoing research, as well as how they led him to become the physicist that he is today.

The lecture was opened by Ambassador Hiroshi Ishikawa to a full house of attendees from all walks of life in person and online. During his lecture, Professor Kajita talked about his involvement in the construction of Kamiokande and Super-Kamiokande, and research of neutrino oscillations conducted in those two observation facilities. He also shared his new endeavour researching on gravitational waves at another observation facility named KAGRA.

Professor Kajita’s lecture was followed by an insightful Q&A session – which saw lively participation from members of the audience. It was then concluded with a closing address from JCC Director Akiko Kawabe, who expressed her gratitude to Professor Kajita for sharing his research and valuable insights, as well as for being the first speaker of the JCC 15th Anniversary Talk Series.
