Konnichiwa!
JCC was bustling with activity right from the beginning of 2023. We held the exhibition entitled “TOKYO☆Neo Duo Exhibition ~Tradition and Innovation~ An Exhibition by HIROYUKI MATSUURA ・ SHIGEKI HAYASHI and other upcoming Japanese Contemporary Artists”, in collaboration with Takashimaya. It was a pleasure to have one of the artists, Mr Shigeki Hayashi, here at JCC too, so that more people can personally learn his intriguing stories and inspirations. I heard that the workshops went successfully too. The participants not only left JCC with their own unique Merlion-shaped chopstick rest, but also with a greater appreciation for his craft.
Besides that, we introduced the yukimuro, or snow aging, culture of Yamagata Prefecture in three sessions. I heard about the surprised reactions of the participants as they sampled food and drinks that were matured in yukimuro. Many Singaporeans are frequent visitors to Japan and some know our country very well. So it is wonderful to be able to introduce more hidden sides of Japan and Japanese culture to everyone.
We also held our first JCC Cinema of the year, featuring the lovable icon Doraemon, at Woodlands Regional Library. It was a heart-warming afternoon filled with laughter, and we look forward to screening at more heartland locations.
Last but not least, the month ended with a thoughtful ceramic exhibition by Mr Yukiharu Furuno and Mr Takanao Todo. After so much lively activity, the calming atmosphere was a nice change of pace.
