My MA Expression in Block Print

Ms Sachiyo Sharma and Ms Sunaina Bhalla during the introduction.
As part of the ongoing exhibition ~ 間 ~ The MA Project at JCC, artist Ms Sunaina Bhalla led two woodblock printing workshops on Saturday, 20 January 2018. Ms Sachiyo Sharma, with whom Ms Sunaina is showcasing her works, gave the participants a brief introduction to the Japanese concept of Ma, and how it is pervasive in almost all forms of Japanese art and even in their way of life.

Following that introduction, Ms Sunaina, who has had over 25 years of experience in printmaking, introduced the participants to the techniques of woodblock printing. Participants were given ample time to practice on paper, after which they began to print on fabric. They were given a choice to print on small curtains, or pillow cases. Many participants experimented with their colours and designs, and created many beautiful designs that encompassed the meaning of MA.
