Director's Message

Konnichiwa!

It has been a wonderful start to the year for us at JCC! This month, we have been especially busy with movie screenings and the opening of a new exhibition. The variety of these activities have really set a lively and exciting tone for the upcoming months ahead.

This January, we held a special series of JCC Cinema screenings of Komaneko: The Curious Cat for students at Temasek Polytechnic, and Always: Sunset on Third Street for students and staff at Nanyang Polytechnic. I believe we can learn the cultural background of a country through the scenes and people depicted in films. In other words, films are one of the most eloquent tools to learn the culture of other countries. So this year we would like to continue to present Japanese film screenings at JCC and other venues. We appreciate the collaborations with tertiary educational institutions that have provided us with ample opportunities to reach out to more young Singaporeans about Japan and what we do at JCC. We certainly would like to have more collaborations with schools planned in the near future!

In the middle of January, we hosted the opening ceremony of ~ 間 ~ The MA Project, which is a joint exhibition featuring works by artists Ms Sachiyo Sharma and Ms Sunaina Bhalla. This collaborative exhibition will be the third consecutive exhibition hosted by JCC that will feature a pair of Japanese and Singapore-based artists. We are truly honoured to host collaborative exhibitions such as this one that showcase creative interactions between Japan, Singapore and ASEAN, taking this year, when Singapore will take chairmanship of ASEAN, as timely momentum.

February is already shaping up to be a busy month, with many engaging talks that will cover a range of topics including exchange programmes in Japan, manga, and reconstruction efforts in the Tohoku region. We will also have exclusive screenings of film and documentaries. Outside of JCC, we will present glimpses into the traditional Japanese art of tea and kimono at the library@orchard and the library@esplanade.

To keep up to date with our events, please do become a Friend of JCC and follow us on Facebook and on our website. We hope that you will find an event that interests you and that we will see you soon at JCC!
