In light of the 50th anniversary of Singapore-Japan Diplomatic Relations in 2016 (SJ50), JCC had the pleasure of collaborating with Nanyang Technological University and Temasek Polytechnic to present a talk by writers entitled, “Let’s Talk About Haruki Murakami by Roland Kelts & Ted Goossen”.
Before introducing the speakers of the writer’s talk, do any of these books resonate? Norwegian Wood, 1Q84, A Wild Sheep Chase or Kafka on the Shore? You probably guessed it, the author of those books (and splendidly many more) Haruki Murakami was honored by his closest friends, Mr Roland Kelts and Professor Ted Goossen, speaking on his behalf during the Singapore Writer’s Festival period. |
Mr Roland Kelts, an author of a bestselling ‘Japanamerica’ and Prof. Ted Goossen, a professor at York University has worked with Murakami himself. The students and faculty were all ears as the two friends spilled the beans about the Murakami’s life outside of Japan as well as in. Sharing their stories regarding their close working relationship (being Kelts a reviewer and Goossen a translator), great insight to the books, as well as fun-filled moments both shared with Murakami.
Following the writer’s talk, the audiences were invited to ask questions pertaining Murakami and his works. Many shared their love for his writing, expressing their thoughts and spin on the significance of characters; while there were few who expressed their disappointment, with wit and utmost respect, Kelts and Goossen responded attentively. An intimate session we can’t wait to have more of. |
