Dyeing Experience Workshop

Ms Tatematsu Yuri, Representative of Nei Museum of Art, doing a demonstration in one of the sessions.
A total of 4 Dyeing Experience Workshop sessions were held at JCC (Japan Creative Centre) on 21 and 22 November 2024 in conjunction with the exhibition, Dyeing the Nature of Yaeyama Islands with Yuzen Zome by Nei Museum of Art. The participants included students from Raffles Design Institute, as well as members of our Friends of JCC.

Each of them received a silk scarf and had the rare hands-on opportunity to experience the ancient Yuzen Dyeing technique to dye the shape of the 5-7 Paulownia plant using several colours such as pink, yellow, red, and green. This technique was created by a fan painter named Miyazaki Yuzen-sai, who began dyeing patterns onto silk fabric during the mid-Edo period.
