A Temari (a traditional Japanese embroidered ball) exhibition by Japan Temari Cultural Association was held at JCC (Japan Creative Centre) from 24 – 26 November 2016, showcasing both traditional and original Temari designs. Over 100 unique designs of these colourful Temari were on display. These included the Temari artists’ original creations which utilise traditional skills, as well as distinct designs from different prefectures of Japan.

Mr Naohiro Tsutsumi, Chargé d'Affaires ad interim of Embassy of Japan in Singapore, also dropped by to view the beautiful Temari craftsmanship. One of the works which caught Chargé d'Affaires ad interim Mr Tsutsumi's attention was a pair of Temari embroidered exclusively with the flags of Japan and Singapore, in celebration of this year’s SJ50.

In addition, workshops were held over the course of the exhibition period, where participants could try their hand at making this beautiful handicraft. Due to overwhelming response, three additional session were held over the three days, making up a total of six sessions.

The members of the Japan Temari Association taught the participants how to make Temari, with each session lasting about two hours. Participants were be given the cores of the balls, on which the partition lines have already been sewn, and taught step-by-step in order to create their own Temari. The members personally guided the participants when necessary. After the workshop, participants had the opportunity to approach the members to ask more questions.

A workshop was also held at Temasek Polytechnic on 23 November 2016, and the members had the opportunity to teach the enthusiastic students. After the workshop, the students were able to approach the members for further questions.

Temari started as a pastime, a toy for women and young girls in Japan, dating back to more than a thousand years ago (in the middle of the seventh century). Many regions in Japan have preserved their characteristic Temari. The fascination of Temari lies in the gorgeous beauty of the coloured threads, woven into geometric patterns around the spheres. This brings forth a contemplative atmosphere.
