Guests at the cinema

In commemoration of SJ60 and in celebration of JCC Cinema 100, Japan Creative Centre (JCC), together with Shaw Theatres and Singapore Film Society (SFS), hosted the exclusive screening of KOKUHO (国宝) on 18 July at Shaw Theatres Lido before its commercial release.

The highly anticipated screening of the Kabuki epic was attended by over 200 guests, including members of the diplomatic corps, film industry professionals, and passionate lovers of Japanese cinema and culture.

Prior to the screening, Ambassador Ishikawa Hiroshi warmly welcomed the audience and highlighted the popularity of the film in Japan, as well as the extraordinary dedication of novelist Yoshida Shuichi, the author of the novel this film is based on, in getting himself acquainted with the real lives of Kabuki actors.

SFS Chairman Mr Kenneth Tan expressed his excitement for the screening of such a prestigious Japanese film, a deeply human story set against the mesmerising backdrop of Kabuki theatre. Guests were also treated to a short presentation on Kabuki by Ms Yow Wei Meng, a researcher specialising in comparative theatre – spanning Kabuki and Chinese Opera – who conducted her research in Waseda University.
