Director's Message

Discovering Kyoto in Singapore! Together with Deputy Chief of Mission Minister Hotta Toru, we welcomed Head Priest Toda Seizan and Monk Toda Souzen from Daitokuji Daiji-in, along with Geiko Tomitsuyu and Maiko Tomieri at a Kyoto City promotional event.
Dear Friends of JCC,

Konnichiwa!

With the summer heat climbing up in both Singapore and Japan, JCC was bustling with excitement last month. On the first day of July, we invited visitors to rediscover Kyoto through immersive cultural experiences, ranging from Zen meditation to captivating live performances by geiko and maiko. While Kyoto is definitely a popular tourist destination, we hope that people can enjoy its cultural depth in harmonious ways.

Throughout the month, we also celebrated meaningful people-to-people exchanges -- a lively dialogue on music collaboration between Sachiyo and Evan Low, the annual Japanese Speech Contest, and the Orientation and Farewell Reception for the 2026 JET Programme participants. The vibrant line-up highlights the close and continuous relationship between Japan and Singapore in diverse fields.

We were thrilled to present the 100th edition of our beloved JCC Cinema with an exclusive screening of KOKUHO (国宝). Co-presented with our close partners Shaw Theatres and Singapore Film Society, the film kept over 200 audience members captivated throughout its three-hour runtime. Be sure to catch the Kabuki epic on the big screen while it is still showing in your nearest movie theatre! And heartfelt thanks to all our Friends of JCC who have supported our JCC Cinema for the past 15 years since JCC Cinema 1!

In the last week of July, JCC co-organised a special ceramic exhibition with Studio Miu, featuring the contrasting styles of Shigaraki and Raku by two ceramic masters. The exhibition was coupled with daily tea ceremonies by Omote-senke International Sado Association Singapore. It was a wonderful opportunity for visitors to appreciate both the beauty and function of Japanese tea ceramics.
