JCC held a wide range of programmes as part of our "Musubi" (結) - Japanese Calligraphy Exhibition, co-organised with KEIBOKU Calligraphy School. On 19 July, Saturday, participants were invited to explore the roots, history and culture of both traditional and contemporary Japanese calligraphy through a talk by Professor Toshimori Yoshiki, who taught at the Calligraphy Department, Faculty of Literature at Daito Bunka University previously.

Throughout the exhibition period, multiple sessions of calligraphy workshops were conducted, where participants had the hands-on opportunity to create and bring home their own art piece by writing a single Kanji character on an uchiwa or small shikishi using Japanese calligraphy under the guidance of Kana Specialist Professor Yamashita Keimei and various teachers from KEIBOKU calligraphy school.

Last but not least, there were several live calligraphy performances as well. On 19 July, Saturday, calligraphy artist Mr Suzuki Takashi and high school student Ms Ikeda Rio each performed their calligraphy, allowing visitors to experience and immerse in the art of fleeting moments created by the interplay of brushstrokes and ink. On 25 July, Friday, first-year junior high school student Mr Asano Toraharu expressed the charm of calligraphy with youthful sensitivity and powerful brushstrokes by writing the kanji characters 「無我夢中」, while Ms Hiraga Keiko, founder of the KEIBOKU Calligraphy School, wrote the lyrics of two Japanese songs –「朧月夜」and「七つの子」, together with live music by Singapore-based Japanese jazz duo Arcphonic. 26 July, Saturday saw the performance by KEIBOKU Calligraphy School teachers Mr Musha Shinji and Ms Musha Takako. They wrote the characters 「泥中蓮」 and 「遊於藝」 respectively.

H.E. Ambassador Ishikawa Hiroshi, Mdm Ishikawa Yuko and Mdm Salwa Mostafa, wife of the Ambassador of Egypt to Singapore, also attended one of the workshops and enjoyed the calligraphy performance on 19 July. A big thank you to all who visited the exhibition, came for the performances and attended the workshops!
