Konnichiwa!
As the National Day is around the corner, Singapore is in the midst of celebration this month. In Japan, the summer months also signal lively festivals unique to different regions all across the country.
The lively atmosphere has been filling the air here as well at JCC, as “JCC Cinema 73: Mameshiba” drew a large audience of dog- and movie-lovers! Our annual Yukata Workshop led once again by the talented members of the JET Programme Alumni Association of Singapore, saw eager participation by all the participants; they helped each other and had fun as they learnt how to put on a yukata by themselves.
The excitement will continue into August as celebrity photographer Russel Wong holds an architectural photography exhibition at JCC for the first time! I am personally looking forward to hearing the talk between Mr Russel Wong and Mr Paul Tange as they have enjoyed a close professional partnership as well as personal friendship for a long time.
I would like to note with great pleasure that the Foreign Minister’s Commendation was conferred on So-Jitsu Kobori, the 13th Grand Master of the Enshu School of Tea in recognition of his significant contributions toward cultural exchange and mutual understanding between Japan and Singapore. We will celebrate the conferment of the Foreign Minister’s Commendation and the 30th Anniversary of Enshuryu’s activities in Singapore with tea ceremonies and talks at NUS. The Grand Master Sojitsu Kobori will also grace JCC and conduct a tea ceremony.
The celebration of JCC10 will be highlighted by the first Bunraku Performance in Singapore in October. You can find a related article contributed by Ms Yow Wei Meng in this E-Magazine. A series of related events will also be held in the coming months. From this month onwards we will be releasing details about Love and Mercy: Into the World of Bunraku featuring the art of Japanese puppet theatre which was inscribed as one of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2003.
So, to stay up to date with this event and many more, please be sure to become a Friend of JCC or like us on our Facebook page! The Embassy of Japan in Singapore’s Facebook page will also be posting more interesting Japan-related content, so please do like and follow the page to learn more about the most current news in Japan!
We hope to see you at our events soon!
