Our annual yukata workshop was jointly presented by JCC (Japan Creative Centre) and Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme Alumni Association (JETAA Singapore) on Saturday, 15 July 2017. Held at JCC, more than 70 participants were able to master the art of the beautiful traditional costume and learn about the current yukata trends, as well as its history and background.

The workshop was conducted by Singaporean yukata enthusiast and former President of JETAA Ms Nathalie Ng, who resided in Shizuoka Prefecture as a participant and grew a strong interest for yukata ever since she started wearing the traditional costume at a young age. JCC Director Ms Akiko Sugita graced the workshop as well, where she helped several participants during the hands-on session and answered many of the questions raised to her. The yukata, known to be a symbol of summer is a traditional Japanese costume, typically worn during natsu matsuri (summer festival). Its assembly is less formal than a kimono, a formal traditional Japanese costume. As the growing number of Singaporean visitors to Japan from Singapore increase year after year, many Singaporeans who are fond of the Japanese culture would inevitably fall in love with the exquisite traditional costumes.

In Singapore, the Japanese Association, Singapore also holds summer festival annually at the Japanese Primary School, Changi Campus, where participants will have the opportunity to wear yukata at the event to celebrate the summer with Japanese residents and Japanese culture lovers. Do check it out if you are interested! Group photo with all the wonderful participants.
