Re-imagining Ishikawa’s Traditional Crafts Workshop

Mr Okada explaining about his craft during the workshop.
As part of the Re-imagining Ishikawa’s Traditional Crafts Exhibition held at JCC (Japan Creative Centre) from 20th to 25th July 2017, some lucky participants had the opportunity to take part in a Yamanaka Lacquerware workshop last Saturday, 22nd July 2017. They had the rare experience of decorating a coaster with gold leaves under the guidance of Mr Yoshisuke Okada, President of Okadaya Shikki. Due to the overwhelming response, those who were unable to participate could still have the rare chance to personally observe and witness the mastery of Mr Okada.

Mr Okada, who flew specially from Japan, started the session with a brief introduction to his craft. He then provided the workshop participants with step-by-step instructions, as they each made a coaster with their personalised design. Mr Okada also personally guided the participants when necessary. After the workshop, participants had the opportunity to view the ongoing exhibition, as well as approach Mr Okada to ask him more questions about his craft. This is the second time Mr Okada has conducted a workshop at JCC.
