Artificial Intelligence (AI) by Dr Yutaka Matsuo

JCC welcomed Dr Yutaka Matsuo from the University of Tokyo for his lecture on Artificial Intelligence on 12 March during the fourth installation of the JCC 15th Anniversary Talk Series. Dr Matsuo has been at the forefront of AI research, particularly on Generative AI, for many years.

Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Japan in Singapore, Minister Yoshiaki Takahashi, gave his opening remarks and introduced Dr Yutaka Matsuo to an eager audience.

Dr Matsuo started the talk by giving a brief overview on Deep Learning. To explain AI’s mechanism of thinking, he presented a multi-layer mathematical model with a multivariable function, which he also illustrated with a diagram on the screen.

He then introduced the two key technologies which have stemmed from Deep Learning – “Transformer” and “Self-supervised Learning”. “Transformer” is a self-attention and multi-layered mechanism which enables neural networks to utilise information effectively. “Self-supervised learning” is a model of unsupervised learning which can acquire knowledge with minimal data.

He also talked about the Japanese Government’s initiatives on Generative AI – which includes discussions among experts at the AI Strategy Council, which he currently leads.

Dr Matsuo also shared that the discussions on AI have been progressing internationally, and in December 2023, the G7 major countries agreed on a common set of basic policies at the 'Hiroshima AI Process'. The first of its kind – this international framework is aimed at creating common rules for the utilization and regulation of generative AI to promote safe, secure, and trustworthy AI worldwide.

There were many questions from the audience during the Q&A session, such as the reasons for using GPUs for parallel processing in Deep Learning, the benefits of AI in different industries and the security measures taken within the development of AI technologies.
