An online talk and discussion on contemporary art projects and alternative spaces by Dr. Simone Chung and Associate Professor Motohiro Koizumi was held on 8 March. This event was held in conjunction with our exhibition, “The Art of Living: Creative Communities in the 21st Century - Tottori and Kamiyama”.
More than 40 participants joined the session during which Associate Professor Motohiro Koizumi from the College of Sociology of Rikkyo University, Tokyo spoke about art projects in the contemporary world. He focused on the characteristics of these art projects surrounding the use of alternative spaces such as old houses, streets and abandoned factories, and how they are trying to revitalise the community and encourage public participation, especially in Tottori.

Following which, Dr. Simone Chung, who is the researcher and curator for this exhibition, spoke about the alternative spaces for creative placemaking and creative labour. She shared with participants how venues and spaces in Tottori and Kamiyama, such as the former Yorii Theatre and Yokota Hospital, have been converted into a place for art projects and creativity, as well as the reasons behind the rise of these alternative spaces and its impact on the local society and population.
The online event ended with a fruitful discussion between the speakers and the participants.
