Konnichiwa!
Spring is finally in full swing this April, and I am excited to greet this season with more programmes that are reminiscent of spring!
The past month was a fulfilling month. We welcomed delighted guests to JCC for the whimsical and sweet design exhibition “POLKAROS HINAMATSURI” by artist Ms. Ros Lee, and the elegant ikebana exhibition “Ballad of Nature” by the Ohara School in Singapore. JCC Cinema also made a comeback this month, and we showed films at Our Tampines Hub, National University of Singapore (NUS), as well as Nanyang Technological University (NTU). We look forward to more chances to collaborate with various partners to bring JCC events, whether they be exhibitions, talks, or movie screenings, closer to all of you!
The Japan Film festival was held by the Japan Foundation and Japan Creative Centre from 2nd to 18th March and screened 16 films in 25 screenings. We kicked off the festival on 2nd March with Director Shinobu Yaguchi and famous Singaporean actress Michelle Chong engaged in interactive talks based on their experiences of making films and acting. The audience enjoyed the talks filled with wit and humour, and later watched one of his films “The Survival Family”.
JCC is also proud to be a partner of Gardens by the Bay for their wonderful springtime event, Sakura Matsuri. On 17th and 18th March saw many exciting cultural performances were held in the Flower Dome and in the Canopy as well as Anime & Cosplay events in the Super Tree Grove. One of the highlights included a taiko performance collaboration between Hibikiya from Singapore, and Hiro Hayashida & Super Taiko Junior from Japan. Their dynamic performance and passion resonated with the crowd, and many audience members were left amazed by their drumming!
The events at the Sakura Matsuri are due to continue into early April, with the Sakura Japan Fair; JCC will also be participating with many other wonderful partners who will share their knowledge about Japan, so do come down to the Gardens by the Bay to say hello!
Just as the fresh blossoms of spring symbolize a new beginning, JCC’s calendar of events in April holds a variety of innovative programmes. These include contemporary dance-theatre performances, as well as a much-anticipated digital art exhibition by the very prolific and well-known artist wataboku. Outside of JCC, we will also be doing outreach with an onigiri demonstration and workshop at Tampines West CC, and an onigiri contest at Wisma Atria!
Do stay tuned to our website and Facebook page for the latest updates on the programmes we have in store for April. All of us at the JCC Team look forward to seeing you at these upcoming events!
