Director's Message

Konnichiwa!

The season of spring officially began on 20 March 2017, and just a day later we saw the first blooming of cherry blossoms in Tokyo, Japan. In fact, I had the pleasure of seeing the beautiful flowers right here in Singapore, at Gardens by the Bay. It was a magical sight. As many of us may concur, spring is truly a season for new beginnings. While Singapore experiences summer all year-round, we hope to bring a fresh wave of events to everyone, as colourful as the seasons.

Keeping that in mind, we were grateful to have hosted Jorel Chan's photography exhibition 'Vestiges of their Hearts' last month, which was also in commemoration of the 6th anniversary of Great East Japan Earthquake. By sharing these photos of recovery of the people and the landscape in the Tohoku region, the artist wished to convey a sense of hope and the celebration of life. We are most appreciative that many Singaporeans felt this same sentiment while visiting the exhibition, as we enter into the season of new beginnings.

It was wonderful to see many Singaporeans come down to our Yukata Wearing Booth, during the West Coast Earth Hour 2017 at Clementi West. It reflects the deep interest people have in our culture, which is heartening to witness. Please do look forward to more of such outreach cultural activities.

From 8th April, we will be holding a touring architectural and city exhibition co-organised with the Japan Foundation and Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) entitled 'Struggling Cities: from Japanese Urban Projects in the 1960s' at NAFA. We hope that you will feel inspired by these ambitious and ahead-of-their-time ideas!

See you soon,
