Conferment Ceremony of the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette to Mr Iskandar Jalil

Mr Iskandar Jalil, a renowned Singaporean potter, was conferred with the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette by His Excellency Ambassador Haruhisa Takeuchi on 9 June 2015. It is to recognise his contributions in building cultural exchange and mutual understanding through pottery between Japan and Singapore for more than 40 years. This is also the first time an artist from Singapore is conferred with the award.

His Excellency Mr Sam Tan, Minister of State, Prime Minister's Office & MCCY graced the ceremony as the Guest-of-Honour. Family members of Mr Iskandar Jalil, prominent guests from the Arts field, and both Japanese and Singaporean have attended the ceremony to witness the conferment. Both the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, Mr Fumio Kishida and Mayor of Tajimi City of Qifu Prefecture. Mr Masanori Furukawa sent their congratulatory messages to Mr Iskandar Jalil on his conferment as well.

During the ceremony, Mr Sam Tan expressed his congratulatory and great admiration to Mr Iskandar Jalil, recognising his efforts and dedication for allowing Singapore to have a vibrant and growing arts scene now. He also reaffirmed the close and excellent ties between the two countries. Following which, Mr Iskandar Jalil expressed his gratitude to the Japanese Government for conferring the Order to him. He further thanked the Ambassador and Japan Creative Centre (JCC) for the support given to him all these while.

A second home to Mr Iskandar Jalil, his relationship with Japan started when he went to Tajimi in 1972 to study pottery under the Colombo Plan Scholarship. Since then, not only has he developed his own style and become a master in the field, he has been bringing students to Japan to share the techniques and spirit of pottery for the past 20 years. A strong supporter of JCC, Mr Iskandar Jalil has also held several exhibitions since our establishment in 2009. From 27th August to 12th September he will once again be holding a solo exhibition at JCC. Do not miss this great opportunity to get close and have a view at the master’s works!
