WHERE CAN I APPLY FOR A VISA?

Visa application can only be made at a Consulate or Embassy of Japan. Visa cannot be obtained upon arrival in Japan. An applicant should ideally apply in person because personal appearance may be required in some cases. When application is made on behalf by a proxy such as a travel agent or a party authorized by the applicant, the proxy must produce a Letter of Authorisation. The Embassy does not accept visa application via post, fax or e-mail.

Visas granted by the Japanese Government are issued only by embassies or consulates of Japan. A visa cannot be acquired after arriving in Japan and it does not guarantee landing permission. Possession of a visa is just one condition for application for landing at an airport or seaport even though there are some countries that do give visas the function of a guarantee of landing permission. Most countries, like Japan, have a system of granting landing permission that requires permission from the immigration authorities as well as a visa.
