Foreigners with re-entry permits to Japan can apply for an extension of the permit at the Embassy if they are unable to re-enter Japan within the permit's validity period in the event of unforeseen circumstances, such as sickness or work commitments.

IMPORTANT NOTES

1. Application for extension must be made within the validity of the permit;
2. Application for extension must be made in person by permit holder;
3. Application, collection and processing times, as well as processing fees are similar to that of visa application.
   
   

Notes to Foreigners Holding Re-Entry Permits To Japan
If you wish to transfer your valid Japan re-entry permit from your old to new passport, you will have to first enter Japan with BOTH passports and apply for transfer of the permit at any in Japan. The Embassy CANNOT do this transfer.
