Brief Introduction to Ambassador Yoichi Suzuki

 
Yoichi Suzuki is Japanese Ambassador to Singapore since October 2010. Before that, he was the Director-General, Economic Affairs Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan, and Japan’s G8 Foreign Affairs Sous Sherpa from January 2009. Previously, he served as Consul General of Japan in Boston (2005-2008), Deputy Director General, Economic Affairs Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2002-2005), and Deputy Permanent Representative of Japan to the WTO in Geneva (1997-2002).

He has long experience in international trade negotiations. He served as Directors of the APEC, EU and WTO Divisions of the Japanese Foreign Ministry. Mr. Suzuki chaired the Committee on Agriculture of WTO (2000-2002) and the OECD Trade Committee (2006-2008). He was also on a Dispute Settlement Panel of the WTO. He led Japan’s Economic Partner Agreement Negotiations with Malaysia and Thailand as Co-Chair and has been involved in the Doha Round Negotiations since its inception. He has also served as chair of the International Tropical Timber Council (1988) and the Internatinal Natural Rubber Council (1994). He has written extensively on WTO in a series of articles that appear in the “Gaiko (Diplomacy) Forum” as well as in other reviews.

He has also been assigned to the Japanese Embassies in France (1977-1979)  and in Malaysia as Political Counsellor (1988-1990).

He received a law degree, LL.B, from Hitotsubashi University, Tokyo and also is a graduate from the Ecole Nationale d’Administration of France (MA in Public Administration). He has taught briefly at the Institut National des Langues et Civilizations Orientales, Paris.

He is married to Takako and has three sons.
