Japan Creative Centre (JCC), Embassy of Japan, is delighted to invite Mr Kizan Kawamura, a shakuhachi player (Japanese flute), for a special lecture and demonstration! Besides giving a brief introduction about the unique shakuhachi, Mr Kizan Kawamura will also perform several popular tunes during the demonstration. These will include Japanese folk song ‘Sakura’, Singapore folk song ‘Rasa Sayang’, and many more! TENKO members will also join in the performance to showcase the rich versatility of Japanese musical instruments. Be sure to join us at JCC for an exceptional night of music.


About the Artist

Born in Tokyo, Mr Kizan Kawamura graduated from the University of Tokyo majoring in Industrial Arts, as well as the 51st class of NHK School for Performers of Traditional Japanese Instruments. He was trained under his father and teacher, Mr Taizan Kawamura, and received his master licenses (Associate Teacher and Teacher) with honours from the Tozan Gakkai School of Shakuhachi.

He has performed worldwide including Russia, United States, and Taiwan, sponsored by the Japan Foundation. He won the 15th Kumamoto All Japan Traditional Music Competition, and was also awarded the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) Promotional Prize in 2009. He was also presented with a Gold Award for the 36th and 38th Tozan School All Japan Honkyoku Competitions in 2010 and 2012, as well as the MEXT Promotional Prize, Soke Cup, and Sankei Shimbun Award.


Currently, Mr Kizan Kawamura is a teacher at Tozan School, and an assistant lecturer. He is also a member of the Tozan Gakkai School of Shakuhachi, the Taizan Association, the orchestra “Mutsunowo” for traditional Japanese instruments, the shakuhachi quartet “Hachiku” and more. Based in Tokyo, he teaches and performs at schools, culture centres, classes for children and so on. Mr Kizan Kawamura also holds classes at his own shakuhachi studios in Nerima Ward, Tokyo, and in Ina City, Nagano Prefecture.

TENKO is a family unit and has been introducing Japanese culture to Singapore since its establishment in 2007. Members have been performing at various places, including United States, India, Russia, Qatar, Malaysia as well as Singapore. TENKO is celebrating its 10th anniversary, and the founder Ms Namiko Sakai has been organising and coordinating various workshops and events in Singapore to promote Japanese culture.
