"Paintings & Sketches" by Hiroshi Sugito
On December 2 JCC had an opening of the first solo exhibition by Hiroshi Sugito in Singapore.Sugito-san is one of Japan's best known contemporary painters and Tokyo-Pop artists, on par with Yoshitomo Nara and Takashi Murakami. This time he brought most of his recent works produced during his trip to Hanamaki in Iwate Prefecture, one of three prefectures severely devastated by the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami last March. The paintings feature scenes of the magnificent mountains and surrounding countryside that were unaffected by the earthquake. From those paintings below, you will be able to view beautiful nature of Iwate through the eyes of Mr. Sugito himself.

Sugito-san says, "Driving along in the countryside, up in Hanamaki,
there are houses and barns with black-painted rooftops, perfectly maintained.
There is a time when the rice fields turn yellow, the rooftops vanish into
the sky, and the mountains and trees turn black. All being watched after."

After the opening ceremony participants enjoyed viewing around the paintings
and talking to Sugito-san himself.
At 2:00 pm on January 14 next year, the last day of the exhibition, JCC
will invite a famous architect Mr. Jun Aoki together with Sugito-san from
Japan and hold Artist's Talk. They will discuss the Japanese concept "Ba"
(place/shared space/context), examining the relationship between art and
location from the perspective of the artist and architect.
